Building Traffic To Your Website

By businessbroad | September 26, 2006

There are a million different ways to drive traffic to your website, and almost as many sites and articles telling you how to do it. Ultimately, though, you have to tailor your strategy to what is appropriate for your website.

For instance, if you have a content website that is monetized by ads, direct mail advertising probably won’t make sense. Direct mail can be very expensive after paying the designer, printer, and the US Postal Service. If you assume a 1% response rate, and beyond that, even a very generous 50% ad-click rate, you’ll be extremely lucky to break even. And that’s assuming that you have other forms of ads on your site, too, like flat rate ads or cost per thousand impression ads.

To drive traffic to a content site, look into advertising methods like pay-per-click campaigns, cost per thousand impression ads, forum posting, and banner ads. Even then, take care to ensure that your traffic is converting at a rate that makes your efforts profitable.

If, on the other hand, you sell products, you may be able to consider a much wider variety of options. First, determine what your profit is on the average sale. Once you know that, you’ll be able to determine how much you can spend per conversion to make a profit. More on this to come, but this is a general guideline that you must follow if you want to make a profit. Don’t let yourself fall into the trap of thinking that a $40 sale means that you can spend $40 to attract that traffic.
